Are custom fonts worth it?

At Studio Boiler, we believe that typography is not just a matter of design. It is an expression of personality. A well-chosen (or rather, self-developed)

Are custom fonts worth it?

Why should you choose your own font?

Companies such as Netflix and Coca-Cola have already created their own fonts to remain recognizable worldwide in every context. It is no longer about licensing costs, but about expression. Having your own font helps you express your visual identity down to the smallest details, from a billboard to a mobile app.

Does it really work?

Absolutely. Take a look at Bekaert, a Belgian steel company with a global presence. In collaboration with Monotype, they developed Bekaert Sans and Bekaert Headline, two typefaces that translate their industrial roots into a modern, technical, yet human character. This typography is now integrated across all their communications, from logo to reports and presentations. As a result, every piece of content consistently reflects their brand personality.

Not just for large companies

You don’t have to be a multinational to develop a strong typographic identity. Even a small, focused intervention can make a world of difference. At Studio Boiler, we designed a typographic monogram for Bressers Architects: a clean, rhythmic logo with its own structure and character.

The visual language is inspired by historical ornamental lettering and architectural details, closely aligned with the studio’s vision: restrained, crafted, and future-oriented. By modulating it within a geometric grid, the result is a mark that feels both distinctive and timeless. You don’t need to create an entirely new typeface to express a strong and unique identity.

How much does it cost?

The cost depends on your needs. Is it for print, digital use, or an app? Will it be used by a single user or an entire team? And do you want the typeface to be exclusive, or can it also be licensed to others later on? Some designers work with a one-time fee, while others use time-based licenses. But even if a typeface eventually becomes public, the visual association with your brand often remains strong.

Imagine another breakfast brand suddenly using the Kellogg’s typeface. It would feel wrong instantly.

What does Studio Boiler do?

At Studio Boiler, we also design custom typography. From wordmarks to full typefaces that strengthen your brand, enhance recognizability, and position it for the future. Even with a smaller budget, a strong logotype or typographic system can already make a significant impact.

Why Rebranding Is Often Just Treating the Symptoms

A rebrand often seems like the solution when a brand no longer feels right. But in most cases, the real problem lies deeper: in positioning, recognisability, internal alignment or brand maintenance.

Design for a good cause

Studio Boiler designs a bottle for HOOOP Gin. Design never starts with just a brand or a product, but always with what the project, company, or team behind it makes possible.
