Once the logo has been designed, we provide you with the various file formats for online and offline applications so you can get started right away. No more stress about making the right choice. But what do you use for which purpose? And why? It’s time to sort everything out so you can make an impact with your logo.
There are two types of images: raster and vector images. The first (raster image) consists of pixels, each of which has a separate color. Enlarging this image will cause the logo to become blurry. Vector images, on the other hand, are highly scalable and never lose their image quality.
Vector graphics
- .ai
If your logo was designed in Adobe Illustrator, it will be delivered in vector format. An .ai file is scalable and always retains its quality. Easy to use for large and small print jobs. - .eps
This file type is also vector-based but has a transparent background. Again, there is no risk of compromising image quality.
Suitable for printing or for a logo overlay in digital applications. - .pdf
Can be exported from various programs, so you can never be 100% sure that your PDF is also vector. A PDF never has a transparent background, so it is not at all suitable for printing on a colored background. A .pdf file can be used for printing (vector only) or as a logo only. - .svg
This is a file with a transparent background but is designed for web applications. Scaling without loss of quality is possible, making it a better choice than .jpg or .png to avoid loss of sharpness.
Raster images (made up out of pixels)
- .jpg/.jpeg
The file type that everyone knows and therefore used for various applications, both in print and digitally. Be aware that .jpg does not support transparent backgrounds. So only use it for photos, social media, and websites. Ideally, you should also scale the image before actually applying it. - .png
Can have a transparent background but consists of pixels, which means that each file must be exported in the correct resolution before use. This file type is mainly used for website applications or social media. Make sure your files are not too large for your website to load.
With these dos and don’ts, you can now navigate between all file formats like a true professional. Don’t have a logo yet? Studio Boiler is your contact for developing branding and graphic design. Contact us with your question.
